Die Europäische Kommission unterstützt in diesem Jahr erneut die Entwicklung des Kulturcampus in Frankfurt-Bockenheim als Teil ihrer Initiative New European Bauhaus und hat das Reallabor „Vision 31: Kulturcampus gemeinsam gestalten“ für eine zweite Förderphase ausgewählt. Das Projekt wird vom Offenen Haus der Kulturen, der zivilgesellschaftlichen Initiative Making Frankfurt, der Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences (Frankfurt UAS) und dem Dezernat für Kultur und Wissenschaft der Stadt Frankfurt gemeinsam getragen. Auch das Dezernat für Planen und Wohnen unterstützt das Projekt. Aufbauend auf dem Erfolg des Projektes im vergangenen Jahr wird „Vision 31“ seit Mai 2025 als eines von nur wenigen Projekten in Deutschland weiterhin im Rahmen des New European Bauhaus gefördert – mit dem Ziel, den ehemaligen Universitätscampus in ein zukunftsweisendes, gemeinschaftlich gestaltetes Stadtquartier zu transformieren.

Das Programm „New European Bauhaus (NEB)“ wurde von der Präsidentin der Europäischen Kommission, Ursula von der Leyen, im September 2019 initiiert. Ziel der Initiative ist es, den European Green Deal – also die nachhaltige Transformation unserer Lebensumgebung - im Rahmen eines interdisziplinären und partizipativen Prozesses durch innovative Ideen und Konzepte zu unterstützen.

Unter dem Titel „Cultural Campus. Co-Creating our Future Spaces 2: Sharing Resources“ liegt der Fokus dieser neuen Projektphase von „Vision 31“ auf der gemeinsamen Gestaltung und Nutzung öffentlicher Räume. Das Konzept entwirft einen inklusiven, moderierten Prozess, welcher den Kulturcampus in den kommenden Jahren zum Labor für die Stadt von Morgen entwickelt. Der Kulturcampus Frankfurt steht damit exemplarisch für einen neuen Typ städtischer Großprojekte – als Modellfall einer gemeinwohlorientierten, ökologisch verantwortlichen und ko-produktiven Stadtentwicklung. Auf dem 16 Hektar großen Areal entsteht durch die Zwischennutzung der seit 2022 leerstehenden ehemaligen Kunstbibliothek der Goethe-Universität in den kommenden Jahren ein Ort, an dem Anwohner*innen, Kulturschaffende, Expert*innen und Verwaltung gemeinsam erproben, wie städtische Räume unter Bedingungen sozial-ökologischer Transformationen gestaltet werden können. Der Kulturcampus bietet dafür außergewöhnliche Voraussetzungen: Die alleinige Entwicklungsverantwortung von Stadt und Land ermöglicht neue Spielräume für nicht-kommerzielle Nutzungsmodelle, kooperativen und experimentellen Städtebau und Steuerungsformen. Damit wird der Kulturcampus zur Plattform, die Ideen für die soziale und ökologische Entwicklung von Städten generiert und einen verantwortungsvollen Umgang mit Ressourcen ermöglicht. Das neue Vorhaben schafft Strukturen für die langfristige Beteiligung lokaler Akteur*innen – darunter Nachbarschaftsinitiativen, Kulturschaffende und Bildungseinrichtungen – und stärkt die interdisziplinäre Netzwerkbildung rund um den Campus. Das Vorhaben versteht sich als Pilotprojekt für eine nachhaltige Stadtentwicklung, das durch seine offene, experimentelle Herangehensweise andere Städte in Europa inspirieren kann.

Tim Schuster, Geschäftsführer des Offenen Hauses der Kulturen, betont: „Der Kulturcampus ist nicht nur ein Ort – er ist ein Prozess. Mit der zweiten Phase bauen wir das Reallabor weiter aus und machen den nächsten Schritt hin zu einer Stadt, die gemeinsam und verantwortungsvoll gestaltet wird.“

Dazu initiiert die Frankfurt UAS ein begleitendes Forschungsvorhaben, das wissenschaftlich insbesondere die Prozesse von Planung, Aneignung und Beteiligung und deren räumlichen Entwicklungen im Spannungsfeld von Stadtentwicklung, Klimawandelanpassung und kultureller Teilhabe analysiert. „Nach der ersten Phase des transdisziplinären Projekts, das Studierende aus Architektur, Stadtplanung und Sozialer Arbeit zusammengebracht hat, ist es für uns sehr spannend, den Kulturcampus weiterhin als Praxisbeispiel gemeinschaftlicher Stadtentwicklung zu begleiten und mit studentischen Entwürfen und Initiativen zu unterstützen“, unterstreicht Prof. Dr.- Ing. Paola Alfaro d’Alençon die Rolle der Hochschule. Die Frankfurt UAS verfolgt mit ihrer Forschung das wissenschaftliche Ziel, Parameter und Konstellationen von Akteur*innen zu identifizieren, die eine gemeinschaftlich getragene Entwicklung von Stadt ermöglichen. Der Campus wird so nicht nur zum Untersuchungsgegenstand, sondern zum aktiven Labor einer gemeinwohlorientierten Stadtentwicklung.

„Die spezifische Zusammensetzung der Projektgruppe Vision 31 bestehend aus Forschung, Kultur, Zivilgesellschaft, Politik und Verwaltung bildet dabei einen wichtigen Baustein, mit dem wir das entscheidende Know-how zusammentragen und die starken Netzwerke knüpfen konnten, die das Projekt zum Erfolg geführt haben“ betont Tobias Krauch, Urbanist und Mitglied von Making Frankfurt.

Kulturdezernentin Dr. Ina Hartwig: „Vision 31 hat der Debatte um den Kulturcampus im letzten Jahr neuen Schwung verliehen und Perspektiven eröffnet. Ich freue mich sehr, dass die Europäische Union das Potential der kulturellen Zwischennutzung dieses großen Areals im Herzen von Frankfurt erkannt und sich entschieden hat, ihre großzügige Förderung zu verlängern. Somit können wir in die nächste Runde gehen und mit der Transformation der Kunstbibliothek zu einem Kulturort das erste Projekt des New European Bauhaus in Hessen in die Umsetzung bringen.“

Offenes Haus der Kulturen e.V. In der gemeinnützigen Organisation „Offenes Haus der Kulturen“ setzen sich seit 2009 Bürger*innen und Kulturschaffende für die Weiterentwicklung des Studierendenhauses der Goethe-Universität zu einem soziokulturellen Zentrum ein. Der Abriss des historischen Gebäudes konnte verhindert werden. In Zukunft soll es – eingebettet in den Kulturcampus und in direkter Nachbarschaft zu Institutionen wie der Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, dem Institut für Sozialforschung, dem Frankfurt LAB, der Jüdischen Akademie und weiteren – eines der größten und vielfältigsten soziokulturellen Zentren Deutschlands werden. Schon heute ist das Offene Haus ein Ort der Begegnung, kulturellen und sozialen Vielfalt sowie der kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit Gesellschaft. Seit vielen Jahren ermöglicht es die aktive Mitgestaltung des Kulturcampus durch die Zivilgesellschaft.

Making Frankfurt Die Initiative Making Frankfurt geht von einer Gruppe umtriebiger und gut vernetzter Menschen aus, die sich seit 2020 dafür einsetzen, dass ihre Stadt lebenswerter wird. Sie kommen aus meist kreativen Disziplinen und treffen sich wöchentlich, um konkrete Ideen für Frankfurt zu entwickeln und umzusetzen. Dabei stehen sie in regem Austausch mit zahlreichen Initiativen sowie mit Politik und Verwaltung. Sie möchten ein Bewusstsein für offene Potenziale der Stadt unterstützen und arbeiten gemeinsam mit den Bürger*innen an umsetzbaren Ideen zur Entwicklung lebendiger Stadträume.

Dezernat Kultur und Wissenschaft der Stadt Frankfurt Das Dezernat für Kultur und Wissenschaft der Stadt Frankfurt setzt sich für die Entwicklung des ehemaligen Campus Bockenheim der Goethe-Universität zu einem Kulturcampus ein, der als lebendiges, urbanes Quartier Kunst und Kultur, Wissenschaft, Wohnen und Gewerbe miteinander vereint. Dabei sollen die bereits auf dem Areal vorhandenen Institutionen unter anderem durch Neubauten für die Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst sowie für das Frankfurt LAB ergänzt werden. Das Kulturdezernat unterstützt darüber hinaus die Umwandlung des Studierendenhauses in das Offene Haus der Kulturen. In den kommenden Jahren soll das Potenzial des Kulturcampus dabei durch experimentelle Zwischennutzungen erprobt und die Beteiligung und Mitgestaltung durch Kulturschaffende und die interessierte Öffentlichkeit ermöglicht werden.

In the 19th arrondissement of Paris, within Parc de la Villette, the architectural firm Loci Anima (led by Françoise Raynaud) delivered in December 2024 the renovation of La Géode and its hemispherical cinema, originally designed by Adrien Fainsilber, for Universcience (owner) and Pathé Cinémas (concessionaire).

While the IMAX screen was already immersive, it is now the whole cinema that has been transformed into a fully immersive experience. Even before entering, the dichroic façade invites visitors into a realm of illusion, where natural light seems to flow through a coffered ceiling. This façade echoes the aesthetics of contemporary stained glass, playing with light and reflections. Its raw, geometric design evokes a monolithic stained-glass effect, where transparency and color blend seamlessly with architectural rigor—an ode to the cinema itself.

Loci anima designed the renovation as a multisensory experience, engaging both sight and taste. From the confectionery area onwards, architecture and illusion merge to plunge visitors into a delicious dreamlike world, before leading them into a vast circular space animated by shadows and light.

The interior of La Géode, an architectural and technological marvel inaugurated by Adrien Fainsilber in 1985, features an inverted mushroom-shaped concrete structure, supported by a central pillar of just 4 m². The addition of a platform to accommodate the IMAX projector and another to fill the pit in the hall had to respect this delicate structural balance, which seems to defy gravity. Loci anima has enhanced the spectacle of this brutalist masterpiece – in the spiritual sense, a concrete cathedral – by stripping it of all conventional cinema elements. In reality, the show has already begun.

A 360° projected image on the walls encourages visitors to explore the space, where the architectural heritage is once again highlighted through light. Two panoramic elevators and an 11-meter floating staircase pierce through the building, leading from the hall to the entrance of the auditorium. A foyer allows visitors to observe the spherical structure close up _ This is not for the faint-hearted.

The auditorium is now equipped with a new 1,000 m² hemispherical screen, specifically designed for a new 4K laser projector, complemented by an IMAX 6.0 sound system. The seating capacity has been reduced from 400 to 286 custom-designed seats, offering six different reclining angles to enhance spectator comfort. However, before the screening even begins, visitors embark on a virtual discovery of Parc de La Villette, as the geodesic dome itself becomes a window to the outside world—one last illusion to enrich the journey.

The interior renovation of La Géode achieves a perfect symbiosis between structural materials and virtual imagery, integrating video mapping and spatialized sound, right up until the return to reality.

In Paris (14th arrondissement), for the GHU Paris Centre Hospitalier Sainte-Anne (project owner), Pargade Architectes completed the new Neuroscience Center in 2024. This project bridges the legacy of architect Charles Auguste Questel (1807–1888) with a facility decidedly open to the city. Since its founding, Sainte-Anne Hospital has been a laboratory for mental health and also serves as a laboratory for architecture and urban planning. Within this demanding heritage context, the Neuroscience project, designed by Pargade Architectes, envisions the hospital of tomorrow through its architectural approach.

The program called for a complete reconstruction of Sainte-Anne's neuroscience university center, comprising a four-room operating and interventional sector, two electroconvulsive therapy rooms, an imaging department, 135 beds and spaces for consultations, and a day hospital.

Furthermore, the program’s ambition was to create a strong connection between psychiatry and neuroscience, leading to a design approach that considers the entirety of the seven-hectare site, half of which is landscaped as green spaces.

The functional organization of the Neuroscience Center thus meets the new complexities of hospital programs. The center is arranged with flexible multi-purpose floors, adaptable to different zones centered around patient flows and optimized management of horizontal and vertical circulation. Hospital-university hubs, or satellites, interconnected and accessible to the city, are situated within the historical framework around a cooling green area. The project thus shapes the future site layout, paving the way for the "hospital eco-district of tomorrow."

In continuation of Questel's utilitarian neoclassical architectural style, the choice of a pure volumetric form, with a reduced vocabulary of repetitive elements, creates a sense of unity and completeness. The handmade limestone-colored brickwork connects the structure with its surroundings, bridging the Parisian suburban and historical settings, with a new urban square that interfaces between the street and the interior of the site. Set apart from the historical quadrangle of Sainte-Anne, the project reinforces the hospital’s overall pavilion layout, highlights its perfect geometry, and opens it resolutely to the city.

In the healthcare sector, architecture is central to all current societal considerations: heritage and regulatory requirements, ecological, sustai- nability, and flexibility demands, optimization of patient care conditions and staff working environments, as well as significant financial constraints. In response, Pargade Architectes (Jean-Philippe Pargade, Caroline Rigaldiès) have developed the concept of a hospital open to the city. Two projects exemplify this vision: the Neuroscience Center at Sainte-Anne Hospital in Paris and the CASH in Nanterre (France).

Complete reconstruction of Sainte-Anne Hospitals university neuroscience center, including: a surgical and interventional area with 4 rooms and 2 electroconvulsive therapy rooms, an imaging department, 135 beds and spaces, consultation rooms, and a day hospital. The building has achieved the E+C- label (Energy 3, Carbon 1) with the installation of solar panels and 4,200 m² of green spaces.

Other emblematic projects, such as the French Embassy in Warsaw, one of the ‘fundamentals’ exhibited at the Cité du Patrimoine, or the Biology Centre at the Croix-Rousse Hospital in Lyon, the CNRS laboratories in Toulouse or the housing at Paris Seine Rive Gauche define the image of rigour and innovation of the architectural practice.In association with Art & Build, the agency is building the new University Hospital Centre in Nantes, a unique healthcare project in France, which is currently under construction.
